Crestock Contest

by Brian Warren on 29 November, 20060 Comments

Crestock asked me to participate in the judging for their five-week long photoshop competition. The prizes are awesome, everything ranging from iPods to an über-mac, with dual 30” displays.

Crestock is a user-centered stock photography website. It allows you to not only buy stock photography at reasonable rates, but you can also sell photos too. I recommend you check it out. They also have a free photo of the week, along with an rss feed to show you the latest one.

The prizes in the contest almost make me wish I wasn’t a judge. If you think you might have some mad photoshop skills, check it out.

Week one entries are already up, but there are four more weeks to go. Get to it!

And, no, the contest isn’t spec work. grin

Coon Meat

Thanksgiving in South ArkansasThanksgiving in South Arkansas
I’m almost done with my travelings for thanksgiving. We extended the trip a tad so as to hang out with both sides of our family. We’ve eaten bunches of turkey, and a few other more interesting meats, such as raccoon, squirrel and deer (we did visit Arkansas, after all!).

Things are a little different this year. Last year, working for the man, I could take off a few weeks at a time, and it was no big deal. This time, anytime I take off for anything longer than a weekend, things get a little more complicated. Holidays are even more interesting, and U.S. holidays even more. Some of my clients aren’t from the U.S., so I got work emails on Thanksgiving day. It’s all plenty manageable so far, but it’s an amusing side-effect of working for yourself in a global environment.

Kettle Chips Beta

Cabel reports on a fantastic beta program from Kettle Chips: “...you will be eating potato chips that most people will never get to eat. I’m not sure life can go anywhere from there.”

Method Arts in Albuquerque

Tired Web Guys

On Saturday, for the first time ever, the entire Method Arts crew were in the same room. It’s fitting that it was at the Albuquerque Barcamp. Barcamp is an “unconference” all about sharing your info, input, tips and tricks with others. Everyone who comes has to present something. Mark talked about color profiles and exporting files for the web. Vincent talked about the dizzying array content management systems out there. I spoke on CSS and typography. It was a fascinating time and very fun. There were even sock puppets!

I live in Denver, so it was cool for me to come down to Albuquerque and enjoy the uncommonly grey skies while trucking around town. I got to meet the guys at Clearwired, eat lots of really awesome Southwestern cuisine, and get a bit of work done too!

We had lunch with the Miox folks, for whom we did a whole branding and website development. It was awesome for us to hear how well the website has been received. They mentioned how people …

I voted, the sticker says so.

by Brian Warren on 08 November, 20063 Comments

I voted

Yesterday I voted. The press went on and on about voting problems in Denver. Endless lines, people waiting for hours to vote, others leaving in disgust because they just don’t have time for this. It’s a true shame.

My experience, on the other hand, was just shy of perfect. It was a beautiful day, and I walked the three blocks to the senior center to vote. When I got there, there was no line. In fact, I think I was the only voter there. My only complaint was that workers were gabbing pretty loud. Thankfully I had my iPod with me so I just played some Yo la Tengo while voting. I even used the fancy new machines that supposedly were failing everywhere. I’m pretty sure my vote was counted, because it did leave a paper trail. I saw it.

Unfortunately, not everybody’s experiences were like mine. I happen to enjoy voting. I get a rush out of casting my ballot and enjoying my ultra-tiny sense of empowerment. The fact that the voting process was so flawed yesterday, …

eMusic Update

by Brian Warren on 03 November, 20062 Comments

f#a#infinity

I’m still enjoying eMusic thoroughly. Every month I get to download 65 tracks. My buddy Vance often alerts me to some albums which are only three tracks long, such as stuff from godspeed you! black emperor, but the fun catch is that each track is a good 20 minutes long. That’s only three downloads. Sixty-two to go. Carpe Downloadum!

Until November 21st, 2006, that is.

On November 21st, 2006, eMmusic is changing their subscription plans. The Basic plan will move from 40 downloads per month to 30. eMusic Plus will switch from 65 per month to 50. And the Premium plan will switch from 90 to 75. The good news is that this doesn’t change for any current subscribers. So if, before November 21st, you are signed up, no problemo. Personally, I just switched to the mid-sized annual plan. I wanted to lock in that 65 downloads per month.

As a reminder, these downloads are straight-up MP3s. No DRM, no lock in. Even just for checking out eMusic you get 25 free MP3s. It’s good stuff. If …
