Anna's Blogging

by Brian Warren on 30 August, 2005

My darling wife is blogging now. She’s been talking about wanting her own site for a loooong time, and finally we took the plunge. Of course it took all of three hours to design and set up once we settled on a general look and feel.

Do stop by, bookmark it, and/or add it to your newsreader. Enjoy:

And Now a Happier Tale of Customer Service

by Brian Warren on 30 August, 20051 Comments

So, just so that you don’t think that all tales of customer service are awful, and you shouldn’t, I’ll tell you what happened today.

So, you know my bike was stolen, and John loaned me his bike. So the other day I replaced the rear tube and was going to install my new pedals on it, but, dagnabbit, I didn’t have the right tool to put on the new pedals. So, today I brought the bike and the new pedals with me to a bike shop. The tool I needed was attached to a $25 multi-tool. I told the guy I didn’t want to pay $25, and he told me to just to go any hardware store to get it.

On my way to the hardware store, I pulled into another bike shop, Denver Spoke. The guy there told me he had a $15 tool that would do the trick, but he also said “I’ll put the pedals on for you if you have the bike here.” No charge. Woo hoo! When I returned from my van with the bike, there he was with the right tool and …

Best Buy, and My Birthday

by Brian Warren on 29 August, 20054 Comments

So, Saturday was my birthday and I had a lovely time. Anna did all sorts of fun stuff for me including an office renovation (documented here on Flickr).

One thing we did was take a gift that I got from a relative back to Best Buy. It’s a DVD of Rushmore, and I wanted the special edition one with all the commentary and extras. The version I got was just the basic movie (Listen up hollywood: widescreen isn’t a special feature).

So, I get to Best Buy and I don’t have a receipt. But I figure since it was a gift, and it’s still shrink wrapped, they’ll let me exchange it for an equal or more expensive DVD. So we go picked out a different DVD and brought it to the counter. The guy rattled off the policy about needing a receipt. I told him there’s no way I can get the receipt, it’s in another time zone. He said “well your relative should have sent you the receipt”. I started to get grumpy. I explained to him that by me coming here and buying a more expensive DVD, Best …

Wordpress, or "How I finally built the website I needed"

by Brian Warren on 22 August, 20052 Comments

Three years ago, two friends of mine and I started to build a content management system for building and maintaining websites. We didn’t really know what we were doing but we had a few very forgiving test clients that gave us a great opportunity to learn a lot. And learn we did, but the project dragged on for years, forever changing in scope and direction, some features turned out great, others remained extremely unfinished.

All the while I was wanting to implement this system on my employer’s website. They paid to use it, and since it was a bit of a work in progress, I was only using bits and pieces of it while trying to find time to develop the rest of it.

It was soaking up tons of my time and energy working on this project and I finally started looking around at other systems to see if I could use someone else’s solution.

I ended up at WordPress. WordPress is primarily used to build and maintain blogs like this one (but not this one). WordPress is an extremely powerful tool. It’s very easy to create a bunch …

Dear Netflix,

by Brian Warren on 14 August, 2005

My wife and I have been members of Netflix off and on for a few years, and have enjoyed your service. Since moving to Denver and starting up our account again, we really appreciate the fast service from your local distribution center. We also enjoy the very wide selection of independent and foreign films.

In the past year Netflix has shipped us a total of three DVDs that were cracked by the time they arrived here.

We really enjoy watching films at home and make quite an event out of it. It’s usually not until we sit down and have the popcorn popped that we open up the envelope to find that we won’t be watching a film tonight because the disc is cracked. Granted, this has happened only three times in a year, but it’s really disarming and a pretty big disappointment as we’re usually really looking forward to watching that disc.

I realize you can’t control how the USPS handles your mail. Damaged discs are going to be a fact of life with this distribution scheme.

I suggest two things you do. Both would really up the …

Summer

by Brian Warren on 12 August, 2005

I have a hard time believing summer is past its halfway point. It seems like he just got here, kicked off his shoes and I poured him a glass of beer.

Now he’s an old man already eyeing his watch and making a mental packing list.

Sunflowers

We’ve had a houseguest or three for the past week and it’s been great. Aaron, of my name is garlic fame, arrived last Tuesday and stayed for a week, and Casey and Traci got here on Saturday. Casey and I visited two breweries, including the Avery 12th Anniversary Party, and did a lot of home tasting of fine brews as well.

It was a blissful escape from the day to day routine, and completely destroyed my internal “what day of the week is this?” clock.

On Saturday, Anna found out that her café is closing in a couple weeks. A few weeks previous to that she found out she was getting a promotion. Alas, what a twist.

Lots of stuff in the fermenter right now. It should be an interesting second half of summer.
