27 on the 27th

by Brian Warren on 27 August, 2004

A wet and dreary birthday.

It’s my birthday today. Anna got up and made some crêpes for breakfast. I made a mocha for her and an espresso for myself (we got some “homebrewing” equipment of the espresso kind this week – more on that another time).

My work gives everyone their birthday off – it’s a free day that you can take on your birthday or another time. I’m taking advantage of that, and Anna’s going to take me around town. I think she plans to take me to a local brewery and maybe out to lunch and a matinee. It’s damp and dreary here today. I love it.

In the spirit of my birthday, I have a few Gmail invitations that I’d like to give away. Leave a comment saying so, and I’ll take care of it. I’ll give preference to those who’ve left comments before.

Bottling

by Brian Warren on 26 August, 2004

Bottling the beer went well. We have discovered that we need a little bit more equipment to make it go more smoothly, but at the end of bottling we had 44 beers.

That was a week ago. Last night I tried my first beer. Though it wasn’t fully carbonated (little tiny bubbles), it was still pretty tasty. I think if I wait another 5 days or so, it will be super yummy. It’s so neat to think that we made this with our own hands! (Well, the yeast kinda did it’s thing too.)

In other news – we have a dog. His name is Rusty. He’s a Golden Retriever/Beagle mix.

Fermenting

by Brian Warren on 17 August, 2004

Our beer has finished it’s first stage of fermenting, now we’re waiting for things to settle down for bottling. We intend to do bottling on Thursday evening.

Fermenting

If you’d like to see a movie of the fermenting in action, click here (Quicktime Movie : 883KB) for a little movie of it. You can’t see much of the churning happening inside the glass, due to the low quality, but you can kinda get the idea. Active little stuff that yeast is!

Brewing Your Own Beer

by Brian Warren on 11 August, 2004

A few months ago, Paul, a friend from my office, mentioned that he’d like to brew his own beer sometime. Fantastic. It’s something I had wanted to try for years now, but always wanted to get someone else in on it with me. I could tell Paul was motivated so I suggested we share the cost and do it together. He liked the idea so we started making plans.

Last night we brewed our first batch. The process is fun and quite simple.

Notes

  • Bring 1.5 gallons of water to boil while steeping a bag full of malt grain. Don’t rush this, 30-60 minutes is fine.
  • As it begins to boil, remove grain bag, pour in malt extract. Maintain a rolling boil for 60 minutes.
  • Add hops as necessary according to your recipe
  • Remove from heat, turn off your stove, pour into (sanitized) bucket.
  • Fill 3 gallons of cold water into a sanitized carboy (giant glass bottle).
  • Drain or siphon wort (that mixture you just boiled) into carboy – this won’t shock and crack the carboy because you’re pouring the wort into a bunch of water. …

We watched The Village last night. Facinating film. Especially if you consider it in the cultural and spiritual context of today.

These Guys are going to ride a segway across the US. You can sign up to feed them if they come through your area.

We’re going to Phoenix tonight to see my mom graduate with a masters and a doctorate. Wow.

See you next week.
