Clive II and more

by Brian Warren on 31 July, 2004

We’ve decided to keep him. He’s super spunky, but he’s not biting us quite as much as he used to. He has this weird thing where he kinda squints with his left eye.

Clive squints

He also really enjoys walking on the keyboard, particularly when Anna’s typing. This is truly something that he typed… including hitting “enter” to send the messages:

Clive the Cat tries to iChat.

In other news we’re scoring all sorts of stuff using FreeCycle

We’ve gotten two plants and some pretty stylish chairs for our back porch. We’ve also had someone pick up a 300 lb. desk. Anna wants to get a new kitten too, so as to keep Clive company when she starts working.

We have a cat now. We’re adopting him on a trial basis. He’s very little and very spunky.

Our Kitten, Clive

We got him from FreeCycle, A very cool way of finding and getting rid of all sorts of stuff.

I hope you enjoy your weekend. Make sure you get outside. It is summer.

Get a Reel Mower

by Brian Warren on 20 July, 2004

As homeowners we’ve had to buy a few things to “complete” our house. A mop, paint, etc. Among these things is a mower.

I haven’t bought a mower since i was a kid. I mowed a lot then, spending much of my summers growing up in Louisiana and Colorado mowing neighbors’ yards and procrastinating mowing my own.

Now we live in a small house with a medium-sized yard. Big for the city, but small if you’re used to a farm. We went mower shopping about a month ago and decided to get a reel mower. No, not a real mower; a reel mower. No gas, no plug, no Mr. Fusion. This is powered by your walking behind it. This is about as simple as mowers get.

Reel Mower

Reel mowers have come a long way from the grunting and sweating of years past. They are still fundamentally the same though: The blades actually snip the grass, instead of whacking it with a propellor; and of course, there is no engine. The difference is that they are …

Our Bathroom

by Brian Warren on 13 July, 2004

We painted our bathroom this weekend. Our house interior is in dire need of paint. The whole thing is just plain white. How boring is that?

So we took action, first painting the bathroom. Out with the white, in with the dark red. The woman at Home Depot wisely suggested we start with a red primer, so as to minimise the number of coats we apply. After one coat of primer, our bathroom was a dark sort of pink. One coat of dark red later, things were looking up. And after the next coat we were done. Not bad for a Saturday’s worth of work. Not to mention we went to a birthday party and a BBQ.

We used Behr paints, which are among the most expensive, but each gallon had a $10 rebate. Nice, high-quality, thick paint requires fewer coats, and lasts well in a humid room such as the bathroom. We still have a a wall that we intend on putting up some sort of accent color to keep it from being Oppressively Red (good name for a band, eh?).

Eventually, I’ll put up some pictures. The …

Pedro the Lion Concert

by Brian Warren on 07 July, 2004

We just got back from seeing Pedro the Lion at the Bluebird Theater here in Denver, Colorado. Wow, what an awesome show! The music was spot on, and David Bazan fielded questions from the audience, which is always a treat. He is a man who strives to be his true self while on stage.

After nearly every show on this tour, Pedro the Lion has been posting live cuts from the concerts. They record their music on an iBook that’s just sitting open on stage getting the live feed. Then, presumably, somebody picks a song from the show, trims it, and posts it on www.pedrothelion.com. (note: You kinda need to have bought their latest album to get the tunes, it’s a worthwhile buy, as not only do you get a fine album, but you get free tunes from the tour too.

Like I said, a fabulous concert. The crowd was, for the most part, quiet and attentive, and the opening band (John Vanderslice) was top notch. If Pedro the Lion ever comes to town near you, you owe it to yourself to go.

Unrelated (sort of) note: When …

Shaving is Fun!

by Brian Warren on 02 July, 2004

Anna and I went to Whole Foods last night. It was a blast, I’ve never seen a natural foods store so big, beautiful and well-stocked. It really puts your faith right back into consumerism…

Well, anyway. One thing I picked up was a shaving brush. You know, those round brushes with the short handle and long bristles? I also got some shaving soap and tried the whole kit out last night.

After the challenge of finding a coffee mug in the cabinet that would fit the soap, everything else was a cinch. In fact, I’ve never had so much fun shaving.

The soap is a large disc, concave on one side. You drop it in the bottom of a coffee mug (or you can pony up the cash to buy an official shaving mug. Right.). Then you get the brush all nice and wet and swirl it around in the soap. Then comes the most fun part. Paint your face with the lather. After that, and take your time because that part is, like I said, the most fun, you shave.

I highly recommend it, as I’m a sucker …

Konfabulator, Dashboard & Mac OS X

by Brian Warren on 01 July, 2004

This is my first somewhat geeky post. Bear with me…

This week, Apple has announced their new version of OS X. The code name is “Tiger”. This looks like a fine new version of OS X, and should again blow away the early adopters, and, to follow, the general public. A new feature that is a part of this new operating system is called Dashboard.

This feature bears a striking resemblance to Konfabulator in both looks and functionality and thusly is causing quite a stir among the mac developer community.

John Gruber, a respected mac developer, weighed in with his well-researched views concerning the similarities and differences between the two, the history behind these ideas, and also whether or not Apple ripped off the idea for Dashboard.

The crux is that what makes Konfabulator stand out is that its widgets look “right at home in Mac OS X”. But is it any wonder that Apple’s Dashboard gadgets look “right at home” on Mac OS X, too?

I sympathize with the developers of projects such as Konfabulator, but …
