This is my first somewhat geeky post. Bear with me…
This week, Apple has announced their new version of OS X. The code name is “Tiger”. This looks like a fine new version of OS X, and should again blow away the early adopters, and, to follow, the general public. A new feature that is a part of this new operating system is called Dashboard.
This feature bears a striking resemblance to Konfabulator in both looks and functionality and thusly is causing quite a stir among the mac developer community.
John Gruber, a respected mac developer, weighed in with his well-researched views concerning the similarities and differences between the two, the history behind these ideas, and also whether or not Apple ripped off the idea for Dashboard.
The crux is that what makes Konfabulator stand out is that its widgets look “right at home in Mac OS X”. But is it any wonder that Apple’s Dashboard gadgets look “right at home” on Mac OS X, too?
I sympathize with the developers of projects such as Konfabulator, but I have to agree with Gruber. Read it for yourself and decide.
